French notaries are public officers appointed by order of the Minister of Justice. The profession is regulated, in particular by Ordinance no. 45-2590 of 2 November 1945 on the status of the notarial profession and by Decree no. 45-0117 of 19 December 1945.
The title of notaire is a protected title. The firm comes under the Chamber of Notaries of Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, whose internal rules were approved by order of 4 September 2020, and within the jurisdiction of the Basse-Terre Court of Appeal.

Under articles L. 612-1 et seq. of the French Consumer Code, any private client may refer a dispute free of charge to the consumer mediator competent for the notarial profession, with a view to reaching an amicable settlement:
Referral to the mediator requires that a written complaint has first been submitted to the firm and that no satisfactory solution has been reached within a reasonable period.
